Post Slang: Hostiles, aka, "uglies"

Alien grunts -
1."Big-uglies"
2."Bee's-nests"
The creatures known as Alien Grunts are rarely around City 9, though some have been sighted south of the City. It seems that the Combine uses them as disposable troops, as they last only a short time in our atmosphere. Some reports suggest that some of the Alien Grunts are not, in fact, working for the Combine, but are an opposed faction of some kind; unconfirmed.

Barnacles -
1."Fishers of men"
2.An "up,up and away"
3."Hangmen"
Possibly spread by spores, choosing to affix to damp, dark areas. They grow downward and lay out a long tongue-like appendage stickier than flypaper. This tongue catches prey and then retracts (much like the mechanism of a Venus Flytrap) into the muscular, toothed mouth.

Bullsquids -
1."Squids"
2."Fleshrippers" owing to their tentacles lined with sharp, serrated teeth
3."Toxic newts", their skin is moist and membranous like a newt's and they spit a corrosive neurotoxin
Heinous, poisonous creatures. Avoid at all costs. If forced to face one, attempt to pierce as much of their skin's surface area as possible, as this will prevent regulation of body temperature and they will soon overheat.

Civil Protection -
1."Cabbage Patch"
2."Chicken Pluckers"
3."Seeps"
The Combine's way of using Human beings to police their own kind for the alien invaders. They are considered worse than the Combine themselves, because they sell out their entire species for slightly better food and a uniform.

Collaborators -
1."Collies" as in the Combine's loyal dogs.
Used as a general term for all those cooperating with the Combine, though also used to describe all those that willingly join CP.
We recognize that some are coerced to aid the Combine. But that doesn't protect them from derogatory terms used to describe their cowardice (however well-meaning).

Elite Overwatch -
1."Snowsuits" due to their thick white uniforms
2."Monocles" due to the presence of a single large, red lens on their faceplate
3."Leet", form of "elite"
Beware of the disintegration orbs their special weapons release. There is no known defense once it comes in contact with an organic substance - it will cause a mass-reaction through all contiguous organic surfaces and completely annihilate them.

Headcrabs -
1."Crabs", obviously
2."Skullfuckers", alternatively "Headhumpers"
3."Crites" (reference: to alien creatures from a movie entitled 'Critters' -ed.)
4."Black Adders" are a poisonous version
Used as terror weapons by the Combine. Reproductive method uncertain. Affix to cerebral tissue of victims, turning them into puppets of the foul creatures. Controlled beings are called Zombies.

Houndeyes
-
1."Atomic dogs"
2."M-80s"
3."Cracklepups"
Interestingly enough, can be domesticated. Be careful not to overstimulate, however, as their shockwaves can be powerful enough to rupture internal organs.

Manhacks
-
1."Blades"
2."Shredders"
3."Salad shooters"
Run from these. Find a fenced-in area or some other covered position. One shot is often enough to destroy them, but don't try to take one out in the open.

Overwatch
-
1."Ovies"
2."Specials" (differentiated from CP)
Similar in appearance to Civil Protection, but considered completely Combine. All humanity has been torn out or replaced, the only remnant is their humanoid shape. Terminate with extreme prejudice.

Scanners
-
1."Photo-ops" as in, 'Careful. You don't want to pose for any photo-ops.'
2."Beholders"
Mostly used to monitor urban civilian populations. Commonly unarmed, though some may have mounted weapons. There is also a variant specifically tied into the tracking matrix of the Striders; If spotted by the variant, chances are you have entered an unauthorized area and it would behoove you to flee. Destroy the Scanner if possible.

Snarks
-
1."Scooby-doos" (reference: a cartoon dog that would eat nearly anything -ed.)
2."Hand-vacs" due to their utility in cleaning up offal and garbage
Used by many Resistance members to clear out human and animal remains in buildings to be used as Posts. Also used as part of some Post waste management systems. Caution must be used, as they are carnivorous, and they will swarm like Pirahna onto any nearby creatures.

Stalkers
-
1."Ghouls"
2."Hollow men"
Humans that resist Combine rule, when caught, are subjected to horrible disfiguring and forced into servitude. They are stripped of all but their most basic functions and melded with metal. Some claim that the Combine leaves parts of their personality intact in order to suffer for as long as they live, which results in a high suicide rate.
Intelligence has made reports of Stalkers that respond with violence when encountering human beings. Some have claimed to see lasers issuing from the Stalker's limbs, though this is highly suspect.

Striders
-
1."Tripods"
Almost everyone should be familiar with these monstrosities. In a city environment they are mostly used for intimidation. In the country, however, they rip apart settlements with their huge cannon and slaughter personnel with their automatic gun. Only heavy weapons have been successful to bring them down. Certain types of unstable terrain may balk them. Some Posts have had success with large collapsing pits, though this is at best a stalling tactic.

Synths -
Synths are a special term denoting "synthetic" creatures, that is, those which may have been wholly or in part engineered by the Combine to perform certain military functions. While we are fairly certain Striders, Gunships and Dropships are all synths (though whether truly organic or only resembling it is not certain), many others are rumored.
Their functions, and their existence, may only be guessed.

Tentacles

1."Vinetooth"
2."Tapkillers" owing to their supposed tapping (possibly to bring antlions to the surface to be devoured).
Mostly speculation. No specimens reliably sighted.

Vortigaunts
-
1."Shock Troops" because of their ability to discharge electricity
Editor's Note: Only enslaved Vortigaunts have proven to be hostile. They are usually possessing of an extremely docile nature. However, it is necessary to list them here, as the Combine still maintains them as both workers and soldiers.

Zombies
-
1."Crabheads", clever play on headcrab to denote transformation of individual
2."Romeros" are the catch-all (dated reference: to popular horror film director -ed.)
3."Shriekers" are an exceedingly fast version which seems to have completely had the crab absorbed into its nervous system
4."Throwers", or "Crabtossers", are effectively carrying units, which move slower but launch headcrabs toward potential victims, often poisonous
5."Turtles" are slow-moving, with one headcrab, fairly easy to kill from a distance but possessing of supernatural strength
Zombies are the result of a headcrab burrowing into its host central nervous system. Their beaks quickly rip through flesh and bone, rapidly implanting their control mechanisms. The best defense found is a sturdy helmet and some kind of face mask (ones once used for paintball are useful, or gas masks). Some survivors have even claimed that cloth ski masks have bought them that precious second needed to destroy the crab.
Headcrabs themselves are remarkably easy to kill. This is in direct contrast to Zombies, which are notoriously difficult, and often appear dead while only just immobile. It often happens, also, that a felled Zombie only releases its parent headcrab, which then seeks out the next host - don't let it be you.
